If we can think of one reason why Manchester has been labelled as one of the greatest cities in the world, well it has to be Manchester music!
Manchester has a rich musical heritage like no other, starting from as early as 1962 with The Hollies, right up to now with bands like Elbow and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
Manchester was really put on the map though as a thriving music city with it’s enormous Hacienda ‘Madchester’ scene in the 1980’s. Bands such as The Happy Mondays and New Order were springing up left, right and centre and Manchester music had really made a name for itself. Not to mention a little band called The Smiths were also doing quite well for themselves!
This popularity and breed of exceptionally talented artists only continued to grow through the 90’s. Bands like The Stone Roses, Oasis and The Charlatans were pioneers in a whole new movement of music that was born in Manchester.
Manchester music has continued to give the world exceptional creative genius throughout the decades, and it is only getting stronger!
We have put together our pick of Manchester’s Top 10 bands (mostly 90s) although it was hard to choose! If you’d like to share your thoughts on your own favourite Manchester bands, artists or a particular song then tweet @pocketmcr with #MCRMusic
